Fire safety rarely feels urgent until it suddenly is. The good news is that most of what keeps a home safe comes down to simple, repeatable habits. Build them into your routine and you will protect the people and things that matter most.
Test your alarms regularly
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are your earliest warning. Press the test button on a regular schedule, replace batteries when they chirp, and replace units when they reach the end of their service life. Make sure there is coverage on every level, outside sleeping areas and inside bedrooms.
Keep the kitchen watched
Cooking is a leading cause of household fires. Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or boiling, keep towels and packaging away from the stove, and keep a lid nearby to smother a small pan fire. Never use water on a grease fire.
The safest kitchen is one where someone is always paying attention.
Respect your electrics
- Avoid overloading outlets and power strips.
- Replace frayed cords and chargers straight away.
- Notice warning signs such as flickering lights, warm switch plates or a burning smell, and have them checked by a professional.
Have an extinguisher and know how to use it
Keep a multipurpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen and another near the garage or workshop. Make sure adults in the home know where they are and how to operate them, and check the pressure gauge from time to time.
Plan and practice your escape
Agree on two ways out of every room and a meeting spot outside. Walk through the plan with everyone, including children and guests who stay often. Keep hallways and exits clear so nobody has to navigate clutter in an emergency.
Store with care
An organized home is a safer home. Keep flammable liquids in proper containers away from heat, store matches and lighters out of reach of children, and clear dryer lint after every load.
